![]() This was a raw file developed in ACDSee Photo Studio Home 2020. That’s a new feature in 2020, and it saves loads of time. How thorough you should be in keywording depends on your needs, but you can import keyword lists to avoid having to create them yourself. ![]() For instance, you can add different photographic techniques to keywords as well as describing the subject of the photo. Keywords make your photos searchable using a variety of criteria. In a recent sponsored article, I suggested using ratings to grade the quality of your photos and color labels to mark your workflow progress. You can use any or all of these features to make your photos searchable, grade them, and track them in your workflow. Alas, there’s no button to make this task quicker. I advise working on keywords in the ACDSee Metadata tab, then copying and pasting them into the IPTC field if you want them to be readable elsewhere. It’s here that you add keywords, captions, ratings, color labels, and categories to your photos. In Manage and View Modes of Photo Studio Home 2020, you can open the Properties panel to the right-hand side. It’s all very well cataloging your photos, but there’s still a way to go before they’re genuinely searchable. This is especially useful when you first start using the software, though you must wait a while for the process to complete. If you need to catalog lots of pictures without browsing them all first, you can do that too in Manage or Photos modes. That being said, you can import files via the software if you want and adjust filenames or add metadata while you’re doing it. They are added to the ACDSee database automatically when you browse them later. The software accesses the folder system of your OS, so it’s enough just to copy and paste the files onto your hard drive. When it comes to importing files into ACDSee software, you don’t need to do it at all. This mode shows all images, whether in folders or subfolders. This JPEG looks especially poor at 100%, but it’s fine for assessing content and composition. *Note that View Mode is not a good place for assessing critical sharpness in raw files, as the software displays the embedded JPEG to maintain speed. A nice feature of View Mode is the set of experimental tools it gives you, which you can apply to the picture without committing to the edit. You can scrutinize the technical quality of TIFFs and JPEGs* in this mode, too. (In another article, I suggest a workflow for this software). This is a good place for assessing the content of your photos and grading them.

![]() ![]() Ever since Redux was released, we've seen a steady stream of tools and frameworks that manage state in slightly different ways, each with a different set of trade-offs. However, React state management seems resistant to this common tendency. Improved supply chain security is a critical piece of our response as we work to keep systems secure.īurgeoning categories of frameworks appear to be a common pattern in the Radar: a foundational framework becomes popular, followed by a raft of tools creating an ecosystem for common deficiencies and enhancements, ending with consolidation around a few popular tools. Hackers are increasingly taking advantage of the asymmetrical nature of offense and defense in the security arena - they only need to find one vulnerability, whereas defenders must secure the entire attack surface - while employing increasingly sophisticated hacking techniques. We also feature concrete tools such as Syft, which generates a Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) from container images. Entries include checklists and standards such as Supply chain Levels for Software Artifacts (SLSA), a Google-backed consortium to provide guidance on standard threats to the supply chain, and CycloneDX, another set of standards driven by the OWASP community. Teams now realize that responsible engineering practices include validating and governing project dependencies, and this drives a number of blips in this edition of the Radar. Public instances of severe problems - the Equifax data breach, SolarWinds attack, Log4J remote zero-day vulnerability and so on - were caused by poor governance of the software supply chain. We continue to be strong supporters of open-source software but recognize that the economics are becoming increasingly bizarre, and there are no easy solutions to finding the right balance. In some cases, funding hobbyist maintainers through GitHub or Patreon provides enough lift to make a difference in others it simply creates an additional feeling of responsibility on top of their day job and contributes to burnout. The situation is further muddied by the amount of critical infrastructure that isn't corporate-sponsored, where companies usually only notice how reliant they are on unpaid labor when a critical security bug is discovered (as recently happened with Log4J). (The same concern applies with free closed-source software, as we witnessed some companies exploring Docker Desktop alternatives because of Docker's ongoing effort to find the right commercial model.) Sometimes the power dynamics work in reverse: because Facebook funded Presto as an open-source product, the maintainers were able to keep the IP and rebrand it as Trino after they left the company, in effect benefiting from Facebook's investment. This shows how difficult it can be for commercial open-source software to maintain a competitive moat. See, for example, AWS forking Elasticsearch to OpenSearch in September 2021 in response to Elastic changing their license to require cloud service providers who profit off their work to contribute back. However, attempts at commercialization demonstrate the enormous economic complexity of the current ecosystem. At Thoughtworks, we've long been fans of open-source software, popularized in part by Eric Raymond's famous essay "The Cathedral and the Bazaar." Open-source software improves developer mobility and crowdsources both bug fixes and innovation. ![]() A stamp tool with options like Approved, Revised, Confidential, Sign Here, and the option to import your own (these need to be in the PDF format, but it could be a way to add an image). There were many other incidents, and, looking back, all I can say is I was lucky in so many ways. And a lesson was learned the night I boarded a boxcar directly behind the units, and diesel smoke quickly filled the car, forcing me to climb out of the open door and onto the roof and work my way down the moving train. The boxcar directly in front of mine caught fire and was dragged along unnoticed for way-too-many heart-pounding miles. Then there was the time the train came close to derailing while racing across a South Texas desert. I was able to ease him onto the track ballast where he slowly recovered from his seizure. Another time, Bill, a massive six-foot-plus tramp passed out in my arms late one night as we were climbing into a boxcar in Wishram, Washington. Poodle Frenchy was stabbed to death just moments after I left him at his camp on the Columbia River. His image, along with others, have vanished and scattered like so many ashes by the side of the tracks.Īlong the way, there were plenty of close calls some, too close. His crusty grin revealed only a single tooth, and all I have is the remembrance of the two of us sitting around his fire while Jack spat every so often onto the glowing coals, each spit hissing as it hit the embers, sending a puff of ashes into the air. Then there’s the tramps like Whistlin’ Jack who didn’t cotton to picture-taking. And of course, the deafening roar of steel wheels turning beneath a boxcar floor. And the night-long slamming of train cars in the yards, followed by the straining of diesel engines and the banging of couplings when the train takes up slack. There’s plenty of stuff the camera can’t do, like capturing the pungent odor of creosote and diesel fuel that permeates the yards, or the dust-streaked sweat of men who spend their lives living outdoors, or coffee boiling in a tin can over an open fire in the morning. One of his handmade knives would, indeed, be a treasure. Now, though, I wish I’d accepted his offer. I declined because I knew it was a source of income for him. The second year I spent with him, he offered one of his knives to me. And Teto, the industrious tramp who fashioned sheath knives in his camp. ![]() Waking him up and persuading him to get off the tracks was disquieting for both of us. He was on a drunk and passed out between the rails on a siding. I stumbled upon another tramp in Oregon who I’d spent time with in Nevada the previous year. He was picking apples while I was crawling out of my sleeping bag. Once, during the winter in a Florida jungle, I shared a bottle with a tramp and met him the following fall upon waking up in an apple orchard in Washington state. Year after year I often encountered the same men. ![]() Even the best of tramps occasionally meet a tragic end beneath the wheels of a train, which, incidentally, happened on a spur-line one night while I was up in apple country along the Canadian border. Missteps while riding the rails are unforgiving. I learned not to ask questions wait for a story to be offered and by all means, listen to every piece of advice given, like which yards and rail lines to avoid, where to ride on a train, and which cars to ride. It was patience and trust that allowed a man’s story to unfold. It became apparent that men, bound together by experience, often begin to rely on each other for survival, emotional and otherwise. Sharing a boxcar for hundreds of miles with a stranger generates a temporary, unexpected kinship. The blackened face, the gravely voice, and the hard life it embodied, haunted me and, ultimately, became the inspiration for documenting the lives of the handful of men who carved out a life along the tracks. It was a brief moment between a row of freight cars but one that stuck in my memory. During a stop in a Galesburg, Illinois train yard, a soot-blackened face emerged from the darkness and asked, in voice caked with dust, about the destination of the train. Alone in a boxcar, I watched the flickering lights of the prairie towns shimmer like grounded galaxies, appearing and disappearing as the train rumbled through the warm Midwestern night. My introduction to train-hopping took place in August of 1971 on a Denver to Chicago freight train. Freight lines ridden: Burlington Northern, Denver and Rio Grande Western, Southern Pacific, Milwaukee Road, Western Pacific, Union Pacific, Louisville and Nashville, Seaboard Coast Line, Southern, Penn Central, Erie Lackawanna, Delaware and Hudson, Boston and Maine. I’m going to install Ansible locally on macOS, but any Unix-like platform with Python installed would also work (e.g., Ubuntu, Red Hat, CentOS, etc.). We need to set up a single control machine which we’ll use to execute our commands. Just run one command and Ansible will ensure only those hosts that are missing Nginx will install it. For example, let’s say you need to ensure Nginx is installed on all hosts. This allows you to safely run multiple hosts without anything being changed unless required. The only prerequisite to running Ansible commands is to have Python installed on your control machine.Ĭommands you execute via Ansible are idempotent, meaning they can be applied multiple times and will always result in the same outcome. If Ansible needs updating, you only need to update your single control machine and not any remote hosts. All commands are run through Ansible via SSH.
